Transient animals in a resident population of snow geese: local emigration or heterogeneity?

چکیده
The estimation of survival rates from analysis of recapture of individually marked animals assumes that all individuals are equally likely to be re-encountered. This assumption is frequently violated in natural populations due to movements to and from the sampling area. We evaluated potential sources of heterogeneity using data from recaptures of 36000 individually marked female lesser snow geese, Anser c. caerulescens, from an expanding population in northern Manitoba, Canada. By stratifying individuals according to marking age and origin (hatched at the colony or not), we assessed the degree to which variation in apparent survival re ̄ ected permanent or temporary differences in emigration and effects of handling. In general, for birds ringed as adults, estimated apparent survival rates were signi® cantly lower during the ® rst year after ringing than in subsequent years. By comparing birds ringed as adults (classi® ed by origin) with those ringed as goslings, we were able to demonstrate that these differences are not due to permanent emigration from the colony by transient individuals or heterogeneity of individual capture probability, but more likely re ̄ ect differences among individuals in their response to initial marking. Approximately 25% of birds permanently emigrate from the sampling area following marking.

Winter Fidelity and Apparent Survival of Lesser Snow Goose Populations in the Pacific Flyway
The Beringia region of the Arctic contains 2 colonies of lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) breeding on Wrangel Island, Russia, and Banks Island, Canada, and wintering in North America. The Wrangel Island population is composed of 2 subpopulations from a sympatric breeding colony but separate wintering areas, whereas the Banks Island population shares a sympatric wintering area ...

Responding to degradation in their original coastal habitat, increasing numbers of lesser snow geese are rearing their broods farther inland. Goslings collected in this inland, fresh water habitat have substantially lower loads of two species of caecal nematodes than do goslings collected in coastal, salt marsh habitat. This likely reflects differences between the habitats in the levels of infe...

متن کاملFaltering lemming cycles reduce productivity and population size of a migratory Arctic goose species
The huge changes in population sizes of Arctic-nesting geese offer a great opportunity to study population limitation in migratory animals. In geese, population limitation seems to have shifted from wintering to summering grounds. There, in the Arctic, climate is rapidly changing, and this may impact reproductive performance, and perhaps population size of geese, both directly (e.g. by changes ...

—Understanding factors that determine sources of nutrients for reproduction is vital to interpreting different lifehistory strategies used among species, within species, and among taxa. We used stable carbon isotope analysis (δ13C) to compare the relative use of endogenous and exogenous nutrients during egg synthesis between two species of geese, Canada Geese (Branta canadensis interior) and Le...
